Pilates is a mind-body exercise method focused on conditioning and balancing the body from the core postural muscles. The exercises are functional, flowing and challenging. Specific breathing patterns are incorporated leading to more efficient and powerful movement. Correct body alignment and concentration are essential, resulting in improved posture and heightened awareness of your body and how it moves. The focus on balancing strength and flexibility helps prevent injuries and improve performance in sport.
The original exercises designed by Joseph Pilates in the early twentieth century have been integrated with recent research into spinal stability to create the exercises that we use today. Pilates can be either mat or equipment based and is suitable for everyone from first time exerciser to top level athlete. The exercises are very flexible hence easily modified for those recovering from injury. Pilates is also an ideal exercise method for during and after pregnancy with appropriate adaptation of the exercises.
